There's A Kind Of Hush

There's A Kind Of Hush (All Over The World)  by Carpenters

I went to town Friday for feed and some groceries as #1 daughter and Sir T were coming. Driving by the river, that one song phrase above was the only thing that came to mind. Everywhere you look there are signs of Spring.  The calendar says it is Spring but we are perched right on the cusp.  Everything is just waiting to break out.
A couple of warm days and everything will start to bloom in earnest.  But Mother Nature is still letting Winter breath down our necks.  Friday night was a prime example of that, it was in the teens and 20's again.

Saturday morning "hush" was no where to be found.  With chainsaws buzzing and the "ground crew" yelling instructions or warnings to each other it was rather noisy.  In two hours we went from this....
did some of this ....
and this....
The next morning there was nothing left

except the logs that the man wants to have the mill turn into some lumber for him, a stump begging for a planter, and some firewood from a hickory tree that came down after the pine.

Sunday after brunch, the man and I went back to town to help a friend and go to the lumber store.  #1 and Sir T left for home with the rabbits that finally got faces sewn on...
Today everyone left for work or school and I started on the laundry that was avoided over the weekend.  Getting bored with that rather quickly I went to play in dirt.  I transplanted 54 tomato seedlings from the peat pellets to three inch pots.  Some that got started in the three inch pots have multiple seedlings in them and need to be seperated and transplanted into bigger pots but I am running out of space inside so they will be getitng moved out to the greenhouse this week.

When the rain stopped for a while in the afternoon, #2 daughter and I transplanted about 20 forsythia plants.  In front of them we transplanted the mystery lily and irises.  I don't expect much from it this year but next year it should be beautiful.

Having made sufficient progress on the shawl, to please myself...I rewarded myself and started the Fluidity baby blanket.  Sometimes things just catch my eye and I have to make them for no apparent reason and Fluidity was one of them.  I am switching from round knit lace to square knit lace right now, and can't wait to see it done.  Of course you do realize that there has been no progress on the shawl but I will return to it... eventually but now it is back to the afghan.

The Age Old Question

What Came First, the Chicken or the Egg?

Around here we changed it to...What came first, the turkey or the egg?  And the answer is easily answered, it was the turkey.  Yesterday the littlest nephew came flying through the door telling me I had to see this egg.  He said he saw the gray turkey by the greenhouse and this was laying there....

And yes it is a turkey egg.  Our first turkey egg ever!!! Now to just find a tom for the two ladies so they can hatch out some babies.

Fickle March

"It was one of those March days when the sun shines hot and the wind blows cold: when it is summer
in the light, and winter in the shade."- Charles Dickens

Yesterday the birds were so loud as they went about finding food and mates.  I had the windows open and couldn't hear the tv so I shut it off.  I would much rather hear the birds.  The deer are coming down earlier and staying later to eat every sprout of green, including my flowers.

I heard peepers the night before but last night was another noise.  At first I didn't know what it was but the man said it was frogs in my pond croaking away.

I have not had a fire going in days however, today's winds and knowing tonight is going into the 20's will have me back at it again.  But the tomato seedlings are growing just fine and will need to be repotted before the weekend.  The lettuce I planted the other day is up but the peppers will take a while.  I still need to plant the dang brussel sprouts but I keep forgetting.

Yesterday I was in baking mode.  I baked another pineapple upside down cake for the man and then I did two loaves of banana bread, apple/plum kuchen and cinnamon rolls.  And in between/after that I finished the baby afghan.  I am going to make a pair of booties and send it off.  This morning I worked on the finishing off the shawl but as it is garter stitch I quickly got bored and started doing paperwork.

#1 daughter and Sir T are coming up Friday.  Plans are for another St. Pats dinner and taking down a tree.  It is a big pine which drops branches in every snow/wind storm and leans toward the house.  Should it decide to fall #2 sons bedroom would be in my kitchen and my kitchen in my root cellar.  My brother does tree work for a living and has finally decided to cut it down for us.  It is that old thing, the plumber has leaky pipes, the roofer has a leaky roof, well I have been waiting for 2-3 years.  I knew he would get to it... eventually...I am just glad it is before it fell!

And not to be as fickle as March, but I better go find something to take out for dinner, finish the paperwork and filing, take the dogs for a walk and hang the laundry.  Maybe I will even get the shawl finished...but I wouldn't count on it!

A Rain Day?

"All Nature seems at work. Slugs leave their lair-

The bees are stirring - birds are on the wing -
And Winter slumbering in the open air,
Wears on his smiling face a dream of Spring!"
- Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Work Without Hope

Saturday was the first day of Spring.  I walked outside to see another flock of geese were flying over.  I huffed because I still had not seen a robin and went about the morning chores.

Later in the morn, I stood with a cup of coffee in my hand, looking out the window and there he/she was!  And like the flood gates were open I started seeing them everywhere.  A damn flock was out there!  What an amazing beginning to Spring.
The children left to go visit their father and when the man came home from work, we went to Home Depot...again.  I do believe that he purposely forgets things so that we can go strolling throughout the store every weekend.  And how is it possible to have gone into a store as many times as he has and forget where things are located?  Why do we walk miles up and down aisles with the cart filling up when we only came for brads or caulk?  And slowly, it dawns on me we spend more money when he comes shopping with me than if he just sent me AND that the longer we spend searching for things and buying them, the less time he has to actually do any work!  Yes, I know I should have caught on sooner but he buys me lunch and my mind has been solely focused on seeing a robin.  Now that I have completed that task the blinders were off and I resurfaced from my daze.

He played Mr. Innocent and took me for Chinese.  It must be something in the food because I walked out thinking how can I be so mean as to blame him of subterfuge when he just worked five ten hour days and one 5 hour and is it wrong that he just wanted a little down time before doing more work on the house.  The man plays me like a fine tuned instrument...he threw in yarn to make an afghan as if I need anymore!

Which leads me to a problem.  I usually do not have several projects started at once.  Right now I have a pair of socks, a shawl, a kippah, a baby afghan, the rug punch and something else that I forget but know is sitting in a bag by my chair.  On top of that, I fell hard for the Fluidity and Yggdrasil afghans.  I refuse to start another project but the ones on the needles no longer hold my interest.  And now that long awaited Spring has arrived, I know I should be out in the yard working.   So I said "Thank God for rain days"  because I might actually finish the baby afghan today if I don't find something else to do.  OK, It is not raining yet but we are suppose to get some and if the man can use subterfuge so can I.

So let it be written, so it shall be done

So let it be written, so it shall be done.~ Rameses II Ten Commandments

Yesterday I was writting about the robin's appearance or shall I say lack there of.  I wrote..."If he waits much longer the geese will beat him here."

Today I was out raking the garden of last years growth (which should have been done last fall but we won't go there) and the geese started flying over....

and I still have not seen a robin.

But regardless it has been a wonderful day.   I pulled all of last years plants and raked everything into a big pile which we will light off tonight.  I came in to eat a salad and went back out.  I raked the flowerbeds that surround the garden, then did the rhubarb and elderberry side.  The chives, lovage, daffodils, day lilly, iris and tansy are coming up.  So is the rhubarb...

Being out there I dream of the colors which will soon be evident once Spring decides to stay. Until then I have to content myself with this flashy drake
and Mr. Rooster' feathers and wattles.
I proceeded to clean the greenhouse and then I started raking the pond garden and realized I had nothing out for dinner.  Decided on a clean the fridge night and put some eggs on so the kids can have egg salad sandwiches for lunch tomorrow.  Knowing the rhubarb is coming up made me go to the freezer for some of last years.  I made a rhubarb grunt and now I am off to a long hot bath before everyone gets home.  Tonight I will be painfully exhausted but it will  be that happily content exhaustion.

I could start liking this weather.

St. Patrick's Day 2010

My uncle almost always walked into Mom's house singing a song.  Usually it was "I must have been a beautiful baby I must a been a beautiful child When I was only startin' To go to kindergarten I must have  drove those other childs wild!".  He took a little artistic liberty on that one.  Another favorite was..."Oh Lord, it's hard to be humble when you're perfect in every way. I can't wait to look in the mirror 'cos I get better looking each day To know me is to love me I must be a hell of a man. O Lord, it's hard to be humble but I'm doing the best that I can."

But you knew it was St. Patrick's Day when he came in singing..."When Irish eyes are smiling, Sure, 'tis like the morn in Spring.  In the lilt of Irish laughter You can hear the angels sing. When Irish hearts are happy,
All the world seems bright and gay. And when Irish eyes are smiling, Sure, they steal your heart away"  He would then exclaim that Bing Crosby had nothing on him... a little gilding the lilly for sure.

Randomly bursting forth in song seems to be a family attribute.  Luckily we marry individuals with hearing problems or a whole lotta patience.  But anyhow I forgot to sing "When Irish eyes are smiling" to the wake the kids up this morning and sang my standard "oh what a beautiful morning".  They love it!  OK maybe that is pushing it a little.  I love it and they just groan but I am sure they would have really loved the Irish eyes smiling song. I will have to remember that next year.

So today I will be making the traditional dinner.  And since this day is supposedly the traditional day to plant pea's or cabbage depending on what you read and where you read it, I will be planting.

Did you know.... St. Patrick's Day is an enchanted time - a day to begin transforming winter's dreams into summer's magic. ~Adrienne Cook

No I didn't know that either.  And I am not planting pea's or cabbage.  I am planting brussel sprouts and peppers so the tomatoes have company.
I might go throw some lettuce in the greenhouse too and do some clean up in there as the chickens got in and made a mess.  Maybe I will see a robin while I am out there.  I finished the gray wool,
the daffs, hyacinths and bleeding hearts are popping out of the ground so the robin is long over due.  I hope he didn't get lost.  If he waits much longer the geese will beat him here.

Happy Acres Ornithology

“Nothing is so beautiful as spring -- when weeds, in wheels, shoot long and lovely and lush; Thrush's eggs look little low heavens, and thrush through the echoing timber does so rinse and wring the ear, it strikes like lightning to hear him sing.”~Gerard Manley Hopkins

Well I don't know anything about Thrush's eggs but I do know a little about duck eggs.  Around here they are a sure sign of Spring.  The chickens production increases and the ducks start laying again.

Years ago, when I first got ducks they layed pretty much all year but the older they got the less eggs they layed.  But one thing you could count on is that they would start to lay early in the year and would continue until you let them set on them.  Then they would sit and hatch some but not lay again until the beginning of the year again.

My ducks are now getting old.  As my chickens production has already increased, I was looking and hoping and yesterday I was rewarded for my diligence!  Two duck eggs!!!!, which the man ate for breakfast this morning.  But when I went out this morning.... two more!!
I am "Happy as a duck in water”  Yeah, I am easily entertained.  Now I am just waiting to see the robin.  I have heard rumors but I have to see it to believe it.  I didn't believe this either...
two pileated woodpeckers.  They must be mates as they usually chase other's away.

There is still four inches or more of snow on the garden but I finished carding the last of the gray shetland this morning...only 5 ounces left to spin.  I know that is what is holding up the robin and Spring so I must go finish it.

Changeable March

"March is a month of considerable frustration - it is so near spring and yet across a great deal
of the country the weather is still so violent and changeable that outdoor activity in our
yards seems light years away."- Thalassa Cruso

The temperatures are getting warmer and slowly the snow is melting.  Since there was a sizeable amount of snow, I doubt we will see the lawn or garden for another week or so, barring no more snow storms.

The chickens have found a nice little patch that faces south.  They spent yesterday under the pine tree, scratching for seeds and bugs and taking dust baths.  The old pine suffered some damage in the last storm and now that is has melted it has uncovered the branches that we have to haul away.

This weekend was spent doing absolutley nothing. nada.  The man worked 1/2 a day on Saturday and then went for a hair cut.  The younger two went to see their dad for the first time in 4 months, so you would think that if we didn't have to run them somewhere or stop to feed them that we would get more done....we visited friends and then sat and watched tv and the chickens.  Oh, regular chores like the animals, barn cleaning, laundry, and dishes got done but nothing more.  And unexplainably after of weekend of rest, we are exhausted!  The alarm went off this morning and neither of us felt like getting up.  I finally got irratated enough to move my arm to hit the snooze button.  Nine minutes later it was blaring again.  We decided having to drive the kids to school if they missed the bus wasn't worth a couple of more minutes sleep and got out of bed.

So all day I have been forcing myself to motivate.  I went to the doctor with the man, then when he went to work I did some laundry, made a pineapple upside down cake,
knit for a few minutes, carried the boards outside to stain them... but all I really want to do is take a nap.  I am hoping standing in the sunshine will wake me up.  I need to make phone calls for carpet installation and an eye doctor appointment.  My self's are arguing, I could be Scarlet and think about it tomorrow...and listen to my other side say "never put off till tomorrow what you can do today."

I do not mind giving up a day to spinning or knitting but to give up valuable time to a nap even when you are exhausted still seems wrong...so hi ho hi ho it's off to work I go.  Maybe I will see a robin while I am out there.  I know,  I will think of it as training because..
...things are growing!!!!!

Find vs Seek

Happiness is where we find it, but rarely where we seek it. ~ J. Petit Senn

I turned the page on the calendar Monday morning and that was the quote. I have to admit I found great happiness in turning the page. I was so busy this past weekend that it did not even dawn on me that we were changing months. I heard it on the news!

The man and I did alot of shopping. Then we stained/installed some more trim, painted walls, made curtains, bought carpet, changed light fixtures in two rooms and put new weather stripping on the front door, baked bread and planted seeds. Most of what got planted was paste tomatoes for this summer’s salsa, soup, sauce. We priced the deck but have to wait to borrow a trailer to pick up the wood and wait for the ground to thaw! But it is something to look forward too.

Yesterday, the man stayed home from work with a sore throat. #2 son is still taking meds for strep so the man figured he better get it checked. Turned out he has a sinus infection and post nasal drip was causing the sore throat, so he is now on antibiotics for that.

This morning, for the first time in over a week, everyone left for school or work. I started to go through and put books back on the shelves that we had taken down to paint. Then I found myself reading some…Some books you can give away and then others have to stay.  There are two books that always get put back and they are so different.

The first one I bought while I was in a book club 10+ years ago. It is called Simple Pleasures. Everytime I pull the books out to dust I re-read a little. It is just a small book telling you to find pleasure in the smallest things…the smell of coffee brewing in the morning, the sound of the waves rolling up on the sand, ice cold sheets on a hot summer evening, etc. I read a little and put it back, because if only for those few minutes of reading I put the world on hold and was reminded to appreciate all the small things life gives us that may get overlooked in the hustle and bustle.

The second book was given to my grandmother in April, 1913. When I was young my mother read it to us but we weren't allowed to touch it until we were much older and she knew we wouldn't ruin it.  When I had children, my mother passed it on to me. It is called The Hole Book. It is about when a gun accidently went off and the bullets travels. You can actually read the whole thing here.  We loved seeing the hole go threw all the pages.  To us it was better than any pop-up book.

It is odd how some things just pull us in and hold us, so even when trying to downsize you just can not let go.  So as I go about the rest of the day I will keep in mind the little things that gave me happiness this morning.  And I will leave you with a picture of something else that gave me happiness....
I got an amaryllis for Christmas and it finally decided to bloom.  It must have been waiting for March also!

Positively Annoying

“A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.” ~Herm Albright

Fair warning I am going to be positive and annoying.  I finally figured it out.  I have been blah because I was concentrating on the negatives.  So I am going to concentrate on the positives.

Instead of seeing long spikes of frozen water,
I am going to concentrate on the drop melting at the end.  With each drip the snow is diminishing and Spring is getting closer.

We got an additional 17 inches of snow (on top of the 8) and bands will continue to drop a couple of more inches today and tonight.  I have shoveled so much I fell into a wonderful nights sleep.  I realized that Mother Nature was getting my body ready for gardening season, strengthening all the muscles which relaxed over the winter.  The snow shovel will soon be replaced by a rototiller and hoe, and I must put back the callouses which have been smoothed away.

With deep snow the sheep are getting their fleece washed off so that I don't have as much work after they are sheared.

Soon these will not be languishing in my yard full of distant memories but once again become viable  products.
The gray shetland is near completion.  I thinking of making a shawl on the triloom.  I am going back and forth if I should dye some and weave it or leave it gray and knit a lace edge.  Actually I have enough to do both so only time limits will tell.

Today I finish off an inside job of painting a room.  Tomorrow the man and I buy what I need to start my seeds.  By Sunday the seeds will be planted...in a week green will be popping up all over.  And they need to be because......

Here you come again

What does one do when one awakens to falling snow and one is no longer seeing any humor in it?  What does one do when one has shoveled, slipped and fallen enough for two winters?  Well if the snow has now grated crushed your last nerve and your yearning for Spring has turned your mind to mush one makes a complete hatchet job of an old Dolly Parton song.  With profuse apologies to Dolly and old English teachers....

Here you come again
Just when I'm about to be happy without you
You waltz right right up the shore
Just like you done before
And  make me start to shake and shiver

Here you come again
Just when I'm about to be happy without you
You fall down from the skies
And the weatherman starts telling lies
And pretty soon I'm  knowin’
How I came to hate you

All you gotta do
Is drop the first flake
And there go all my defenses
Just leave it up to you
And in a little while
You're messin' up my mind
An' I fogging up my lenses

Here you come again
Dropping more snow in feet or inches
An' shakin' us up so
That all I really know
Is here you come again
An' I hate snow

All you gotta do
Is drop the first flake
And there go all my defenses
Just leave it up to you
And in a little while
You're messin' up my mind
An' I fogging up my lenses

Here you come again
Dropping more snow in feet or inches
An' shakin' us up so
That all I really know
Is here you come again
An' I hate snow

Here I go
An' I hate snow
An' I hate snow
Here you come again
An' I hate snow
Here I go
To shovel more snow

10:28  Returned from walk....three inches of snow so far and nine chicken eggs.

It fell and fell

"The cold was our pride, the snow was our beauty. It fell and fell, lacing day and night together in a milky haze, making everything quieter as it fell, so that winter seemed to partake of religion in a way no other season did, hushed, solemn." - Patricia Hampl

Yesterday it snowed all day.  We would have a period of snow and then it melted, more snow, more melt.  This continued until the late afternoon and then it was all snow and quickly accumulating.  My son called when his power went off about 7:45.  We were feeling quite smug in out lit house until about 8:30 when ours went out.  We got out the generator and watched tv until about 10:15 when the electric came back on.  We reset the bedside clock and the coffee pot.  Whereas I was looking forward to getting up and making a perked pot of coffee the man is all about having his coffee steaming hot and waiting for him before he crawls out from between the covers.  The electric went off and on all night.  About 5 o'clock we got up to a wonderland with 8 inches of snow!
When the man left for work, #1 daughter and I shoveled paths around the house.  We shoveled an area for the chickens to come out.  Although the snow is wet and heavy this time, there is no wind making it quite comfortable to be outside.
The electric played havoc on all electronics until it warmed enough for the snow to fall off the branches. After breakfast and more news watching, #1 daughter decided to leave for home today because this is our forecast...

A SECOND...AND PERHAPS MORE POWERFUL STORM...IS EXPECTED TO

IMPACT THE REGION FROM LATE TONIGHT...THROUGH THURSDAY... AND
INTO FRIDAY. A PERIOD OF HEAVY SNOWFALL IS POSSIBLE ON THURSDAY
AND THURSDAY NIGHT...AS A STORM CENTER INTENSIFIES NEAR NEW YORK
CITY.
STORM TOTALS OF A FOOT OR MORE ARE POSSIBLE THROUGH FRIDAY EVENING.

ALSO...STRONG GUSTY WINDS ARE EXPECTED TO DEVELOP FROM THURSDAY
AFTERNOON THROUGH FRIDAY...LEADING TO SIGNIFICANT BLOWING AND
DRIFTING AND POSSIBLE WHITE OUT CONDITIONS.

Whereas this past storm really only accumulated in the three eastern counties, this next one is going to be more wide spread.  If she didn't leave during this small window she would be here well into this weekend.  Now she will be home in time to have a short nap from the stress of driving and then be awake for Sir T to take her to dinner!

We have been busy while she was here.  Lots of molding got stained and during breaks she baked an awesome Paula Deen apple cake and I baked bread. The real yeasty, knead it, let it rise, punch it down, six loaves at one time type of bread!   It was my mother's recipe and I had always wanted to try it but chickened out and did the Artisan Bread in 5 instead.  I made some mistakes and it didn't rise as much as when my mother made it, but everyone loved it.  Now I just have to get to the store for more flour as I can see this being a continuous thing.
And I figured I am going to spin up all the gray wool.  Maybe when the gray is gone, Spring will be here.  I am picking up needed supplies for starting seeds this weekend so it better get here soon.  Hopefully this storm will be Winter's last hurrah.  Now I have to go fill up water jugs and bring in more firewoods...just in case.

FYI:  Only 18 days until Daylight Savings Time

"Frühjahrsmüdigkeit"

As a translation of the German term "Frühjahrsmüdigkeit" (lit. "Spring tiredness), Spring Fever is the name for a temporary mood typically characterized by a state of low energy and weariness experienced by many people in springtime. It is not in the category of a diagnosed illness, but rather a phenomenon thought to be initiated by a change in the season. ~ Wikipedia
I  thought it was Spring fever but now I am leaning toward the Spring tiredness or maybe it is winter tiredness.  I guess it is similiar to SAD except I don't have starchy food cravings.  All I know is I really don't feel like doing a damn thing.  I fell blah.  I force myself to get off my ass and motivate...make the bed (again) do dishes (again) do laundry (again) cooking (again) dust (again) mop floor (again) vacuum (again)it just seems so monotonous.

And the biggest tv news according to the news reporters is that they are going to preempt all shows for Tiger Woods.  A famous person who has just about everything gets caught in a scandal (again), oh my, yes definitely the best news going.

It is not time to get things into the greenhouse because it is not heated.  Snow is predicted for the coming week and I have yet to see a robin.  Blah.

But I have been spinning more of the Shetland
and I started the rug punch.
I should have chosen a different color for the back ground as the "pine" tree really doesn't stick out but it is a first so it is a learning experience.  I have it set to do the shortest pile and I still find myself not going all the way down.  I also need to buy a different hoop.  I am using a regular embroidery hoop and I find I need something that holds it better.  But I will finish it and then I want to try locker hooking but designs seem a little more limited.

So two things will hopefully pull me from my frühjahrsmüdigkeit...
1)  the weatherman said that in less than three weeks sunset will go from 5:43 to 7:08 with the average temperature going from 38 to 48.  I am sure to see a robin before then.  Right?
AND
2) #1 daughter is visiting for 10 days. I know she will make me get up and do things.  Hope I have the energy to keep up with her.

This Could Be The Start Of Something Beautiful

“Never be afraid to try something new. Remember, amateurs built the ark. Professionals built the Titanic.”

I am finally ready to start playing with the needle punch.  It has been languishing since I bought it at Rhinebeck.  There were excuses such as I had to finish Christmas presents, I have other projects started etc, etc, etc. But now I have no more excuses.

This weekend I finally finished the scarf.
I now know I should have used a k1p1 on the sides.  I thought the ribbing would keep it from rolling but it does tend to roll a little.  And the bind off end flairs more than the beginning.  I will have to block it and see what I think then.

I have also reached the end of my rabbit knitting.  I finished with five and didn't start on the eggs as I realized it was just another excuse.  Heck #1 and I even painted my bedroom. So now I am off to surf the net for some design that will spark my rug punching nerve.  Something easy, cute but not too cute, country-ish, maybe whimsical, using what I have, and useful as I don't need another project to throw in a box....should be easy right?  Thankfully, #1 daughter and Sir T came this weekend and gave me a laptop.  Now I can sit in the comfort of my chair near the fire and find exactly what I am looking for.  Wish me luck.

How Do I Love Thee?

Wishing everyone a Happy Valentines Day with the oft quoted poem....

How Do I Love Thee ~ Elizabeth Barrett Browning

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of Being and ideal Grace.
I love thee to the level of everyday's
Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light.
I love thee freely, as men strive for Right;
I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise.
I love thee with a passion put to use
In my old griefs, and with my childhood's faith.
I love thee with a love I seemed to lose
With my lost saints, --- I love thee with the breath,
Smiles, tears, of all my life! --- and, if God choose,
I shall but love thee better after death.

Oh O-R-E-I?

The most wasted of all days is one without laughter. ~e.e. cummings

I didn't want the day to be wasted so I thought I would give you something to laugh at...

#2 son recently went to the eye doctor.  He needed glasses, which he received.  We discussed contacts because of his participation in sports.  He got fitted, wore them for a week and went back to be evaluated.  He had trouble putting the contacts in at first but after two weeks of me putting them in for him he got the hang of it.  We put in an order for a years supply.
The other day, the youngin' was sitting in his gaming chair playing Xbox.  He had a couple of Oreo's lying on his lap.  He looked down to grab a cookie, threw the cookie in his mouth whole and looked back up to continue playing his game.  As he starts chewing, he quickly realizes that something is wrong, he can't see right.  And then he swallows and something sticks in his throat.  He starts coughing, pauses the game, checks his eye in the mirror and then he realizes he swallowed his contact.

He comes running out to the living room coughing, laughing and crying, asking what should he do, he swallowed his contact!  We did not believe him, but the coughing continued, his contact was missing and he doesn't give up his time on Xbox for nothing!  He coughed, he gargled and after about 15 minutes, it became unstuck but he did not recover his contact, if you know what I mean.  The man jokingly asked him why would he swallow his contact, and #2 said he didn't mean too.

Then yesterday we went to pick up his year's supply.  If you bought a year's supply, you got a $30 mail in rebate.  When we arrived home the man told #2 that the eye doctor needed back the contacts that he was originally given before we could get the rebate.  #2 said he only had the one and what he suppose to do.  The man told him he had to retrieve it.  #2's jaw hit the floor and he asked how was he suppose to do that!  The man told him he would suggest using a pair of the disposible gloves that I have for canning.  #2 was so upset, he said that he couldn't do that, food digests in 8 hours and it had been more than that.  The evil step father said he would have to continue to check for a few days because maybe it got stuck like it did in his throat!  Poor son argued that they were disposible lens and then went and read the whole rebate form almost in tears.  When he was finished he did not find it humorous as it never stated he needed to return them.

How we kept a straight face while discussing this is beyond me.  Poor son has evil parents...but he still loves us and I am sure will get even with us in our senior years.

The Blizzard That Wasn't

"There is nothing in the world more beautiful than the forest clothed to its very hollows in snow. It is the
still ecstasy of nature, wherein every spray, every blade of grass, every spire of reed, every intricacy of twig,
is clad with radiance."- William Sharp

They called for snow and I really was looking forward to it as we haven't had a good ole fashioned dumping in a while. I went to bed knowing when I woke the world would be covered...well in truth, we only had a dusting when I got up. But it did continue. The seed pods on the Rose of Sharon filled
and the buds of the forsythia got covered.
Then the roads started getting a little slick.
The kids had the day off and the nephews were in and out. The snow continued and eventually it was the "still ecstasy of nature".
The schools cancelled for the second day fearing the reports of continued snow accumulations until 10-midnight....but it never came. We only got 8 inches.

After every storm the sun will smile;  -William R. Alger

And the next morning was no exception.  Things were definitely looking up.
The sheep went out, their trails proof of their wanderings

The chickens were just that..chicken.
They did eventually go out later but didn't venture far.

So while we didn't get hammered like was expected and for some strange reason wanted, we did get enough to make the kids and myself happy.  Of course there are parts of the east coast that feel...

"There seems to be so much more winter than we need this year."- Kathleen Norris
So I guess we were lucky, we got enough to make everyone happy but not so much that we hate winter.  And somewhere under the tent of snow lies the seeds of Spring.

Hopping Around

"Some bunny loves you"

That was the saying on a t-shirt that #1 daughter received along time ago from her grandmother.  I can't remember if she got it for Valentine's Day or Easter.  And why, you might ask, is this on my mind?  Well it started on Sunday.  I was merrily knitting away on a scarf.  I saw a design for a bag, but didn't want the bag so tried to do it on a scarf.  I was going to do a keyhole scarf with it but got caught up and went further along.  As I am "always forward, never reverse" I decided to make it a full length scarf.
So, I was working a way when the Super Bowl came on.  And for some reason K4 P2 and then P4, K2 on the return was too much for my brain to comprehend while yelling at men on the tv that get paid millions to play football, that I know more than they do.  Ignore the irony of that.  But anyhow I pulled out the felted bunny pattern that I found on Ravelry.  I had printed this out to do some for #1 so she would have some Easter things for her house.  It is very easy with knit stitches only so I figured I could handle it.  By the end of the game I had finished one of the bunnies.

Thinking he was kinda cute, I started a second one.  I have tried to squeeze a couple of rounds in when I  ran upstairs/inside to get a cup of coffe or use the bathroom.  The man finally caught on though and back to work it was for me.  Huh.  You would think he is on vacation and trying to get things done.  The nerve of him!  Well I am now on my forth one.
They are very rustic, use very little yarn so scraps are good and for some reason that is making me happy.  I have to do their faces and since I didn't felt them I am going to needle felt a tail on them.  Eventually I will end up back on the scarf but I think I am going to make a couple of more and maybe some Easter eggs.

So now I have to ask...We woke this morning to a beautiful sunny day....
but we are due to get somewhere between 4 to 20 inches of snow (you have to love meteorologists)....so is it wrong to want the 20 inches so we couldn't work outside and that we lose electric so we can't work in the basement so that I can knit more?  Yeah, I thought that was wrong to wish for too, and seeing as how #2 daughter is home with the stomach virus, I don't want to tempt fate so I am going to bring in more firewood.
